M-Audio Producer USB microphone Review & Rating

Recording applications like Apple's GarageBand and M-Audio's Session have taken a lot of the mystery out of making music and podcasts on computers, but for many users, the daunting task of selecting microphones, mic preamps, and sound cards is a real turn-off. The new USB microphone from M-Audio, called the Producer, offers a simple solution for home recorders. This condenser mic delivers pleasing sound, has a built-in headphone jack and preamp, and connects to a computer's USB port.

M-Audio isn't the first to make a USB mic: Blue Microphones makes a USB condenser model called the Snowball for roughly the same price. What makes the Session music producer different is its seamless integration with such popular software as M-Audio's Session and Apple's GarageBand. It also stands out for its ability to monitor the master output of the software while recording via a built-in headphone jack. This feature greatly reduces latency (noticeable and undesirable delay). On my tests, the Producer sounded good for a $100 mic. Those who have been toiling away with cheap Radio Shack mics as their primary recording option will find it both an ergonomic and audio-quality improvement.

The Producer looks like the archetypal modern condenser cardiod-pattern mic, with a metallic grill covering its capsule and overall dimensions of 9.5 by 2.8 by 7.75 inches (HWD). The body below the grill is blue, with a 3.5mm headphone jack towards the bottom of the front side, a blue power indicator behind the grill that lights up when the USB cable is plugged into a computer, and, of course, the USB connection where you would normally find the XLR connection. Like most condensers, M-Audio's new mic has some heft to it (3 pounds), which makes the tripod a bit less useful than it could be. For recording most vocals, you usually position the mic so it's more or less vertical, and this works perfectly with the tripod. If you plan to angle the mic on the floor to find a sweet spot for your guitar amp, however, be careful—its weight could topple the whole setup over (never a good thing for a delicate mic!). The good news is that the mic mount is removable from the tripod and will fit on standard mic stands. In other words, you should view the included tripod as pretty much a vocals-only option, and for that matter, desktop-only (given its approximate 7-inch height). Other accessories include a vinyl faux leather pouch, a USB cable, and software to install the driver for Session.

I was impressed with the overall audio quality of this microphone. Of course, it can't hold a candle to more expensive modern condensers from companies like AKG and Neumann, but considering its $100 price the Producer fared well. It's rare to find any decent mic for $100, much less a condenser: Vocal recordings were crisp in the mid-high frequencies. The mic showed no distortion, and it worked with Session and GarageBand seamlessly. Once the driver was installed on my test PC, the mic immediately showed up as hardware in the Audio hardware menu under ASIO. Connecting the mic also brought up a prompter window in GarageBand for Macs.

With my IBM ThinkPad, there was a moment when I received no output through the headphones connected to the mic, but this was because the output volume and monitor mix were turned too low. M-Audio assures me that this will not be the case with mics available to the public. Even if this problem does occur, it's an easy fix in the ASIO settings menu, where you can easily adjust input gain levels and latency.

I'll probably stick with my old standby dynamic mic, the Shure SM57, for recording guitar amps, despite the fact that the $75 Shure doesn't come with a built-in preamp and monitoring system. The reason is not so much the sound—the Producer delivers a decent response—but that the placement of the Producer's headphone jack makes plugging in the headphones difficult when the mic is, say, on the floor. When I switched to my computer's headphone jack as the output source instead, serious latency issues made it harder to record tracks. This is the only real complaint I have about the M-Audio's mic. I hope M-Audio creates an accessory to fix this: A headphone-out puck with a super-long cable on it would do the trick (there needs to be a stage between headphone wearer and floor-placed mic so that sudden movements don't shift the mic's placement).

Despite the headphone jack issue, if I had a kid who was getting into home recording on a PC and using Session or GarageBand (though not ProTools—the mic won't work with it), the M-Audio Producer would be my choice for his or her first microphone. The USB connection eliminates the need for other expensive links in the chain, and the mic is reasonably priced without sounding cheap.

M-Audio offers a one-year warranty on the Producer USB microphone. For product support, visit m-audio.com/support

Bottom Line: The USB microphone is a fairly new concept. M-Audio Producer is unique in that it has a headphone jack built in, works seamlessly with Session and GarageBand, and sounds pretty good.

How do I install and authorize Cubase LE?

See our video guide below for a full walkthrough on downloading, installing and authorizing Cubase LE:

Do I have to use Cubase LE?

No. Your M-Track 2X2 will connect with virtually any DAW or audio recording software for multi-channel recording. Or just use it as an audio output for your computer to listen to iTunes, Spotify, and other media players.

How do I connect the M-Track 2X2 to my computer?

The M-Track 2X2 comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable as well as a USB-C to USB-A cable to ensure that it can connect to all current and future USB ports.  USB-C is becoming the new industry standard connector and cable for connectivity and power.  For more information on USB-C connections, check out this great article.

There are no differences in audio quality between the USB-A, B, or C connections.

Do I need a power supply?

No. The M-Track 2X2 is USB bus-powered meaning that it is powered simply by connecting it to your computer with the included USB cable.  No additional power connections are necessary.

Why is my M-Track 2X2 not detected by my computer?

The M-Track 2X2 requires a driver to connect with a Windows operating system. If you're using Windows and have not already installed the driver, navigate to our Drivers & Updates page to download the latest Windows driver. Choose USB Audio and MIDI interfaces > M-Track 2X2 > your operating system, and then click Show Results to get a download link.

The M-Track 2X2 is class compliant for Mac operating systems and does not require a driver. If you still have trouble, follow our article here for some troubleshooting tips and tricks.

Why is my microphone not producing sound?

The Nova Black microphone is a condenser mic which means it requires phantom power to function. Your M-Track 2X2 is equipped with a +48V phantom power switch on the front to provide the necessary requirement. Connect the microphone before enabling phantom power.

    What is phantom power?

Phantom power is a DC (direct current) voltage that is used to power active electronics such as a condenser microphone.

Can I connect something other than a microphone to the M-Track 2X2?

Yes! The M-Track features a combo Mic/Line input for Input 1 that will accept XLR, TRS and TS cables.

For microphones, use an XLR or 1/4" (6.35 mm) TRS cable. For a guitar or bass with an active pickup, use a standard 1/4” (6.35 mm) TS cable. For line level signals, use a 1/4" (6.35 mm) TRS cable. View the input signal level with the LED Meters.

A guitar or bass with a passive pickup should be connected to Input 2 on the front using a standard 1/4" (6.35 mm) TS cable.

What does the monitor knob do on the M-Track 2X2?

The monitor knob on the M-Track controls the level of the Main Outputs, which are ordinarily connected to your powered monitors or amplifier system. To control the level of the headphone output, use the headphone volume knob in the top right.

What does the USB/Direct knob do?

The knob labeled USB/Direct adjusts the mix of the audio signal from your inputs (Direct) and the audio output of your computer (USB) that will be sent to the main outputs and headphone output. This prevents latency by allowing you to listen to your microphone or other input signals directly from the M-Track. Latency is the delay between the actual sound of your instrument/voice and the recorded signal returning from your computer/DAW.

If you are experiencing latency when recording, adjust the knob towards the Direct position to increase the blend of the direct signal from your inputs in your monitor mix. This will let you hear the incoming audio from your inputs without latency while still being able to hear the playback signal from your DAW. Be sure to turn off track monitoring in your DAW to prevent a duplicate and delayed monitor signal.

For most situations, setting the knob near the center works well.

How do I know where to set the gain for my microphone?

The level of the gain will depend on the signal that you're recording. In general, a strong signal will be somewhere between -20dB and -6dB (i.e. the bottom two lights on the M-Track channel LED). This gives you plenty of headroom for peaks without being too low. In other words, turning the gain up to a point where your loudest level (within reason) reaches the -6dB light is a good setting. It's also ok to hit the -3dB light, but going any higher could result in audible distortion.

Depending on the strength of your recording source (voice, instrument, etc.), it's not uncommon to turn the gain knob about 75% of the way up.

For a more in-depth explanation of recording levels and gain staging, check out our gain-staging article below:

I connected my guitar to Input 1, but the signal is very low. Is this normal?

Use Input 2 for guitar. The 1/4" combo jack for input 1 is intended for line-level signals like keyboards and synthesizers. To connect a guitar, bass, or other instrument-level devices, use the 1/4" (6.35 mm) input for channel 2 located on the front of the M-track to properly amplify the signal. Remember to then choose Channel 2 as the input for your track in your DAW to record the instrument signal.

What sample rates does the M-Track 2X2 support?

The M-Track 2X2 supports up to 24-bit and 192kHz studio-quality sample rates to capture every nuance and subtlety of your performance.

What are the minimum system requirements?

    M-Track 2X2

    • Windows 7 (64 & 32-bit)
    • Mac OSX 10.8

    Cubase LE

    • Windows 7 (64-bit)
