Rode NT-USB Original Audio Recording – Hear How It Sounds

The Rode NT-USB Microphone In More Detail

A High Quality Package: The first thing we thought about the microphone was how beautifully it was packaged. Everything about it feels like top quality. The components just fit together really nicely.

Recording Music: The Rode NT-USB has all the features you need to make a really good quality recording of any vocal track or acoustic instrument. The pop filter can easily be moved in front of the microphone to eliminate explosive ‘s’ and ‘p’ sounds while laying down vocals. The sensitivity and frequency response mean it can pick up all the nuances of an acoustic instrument performance.

Voiceovers: The Rode is easy to use for voiceovers. Because it has a built in headphone port with volume control and a monitor-mix knob as well, you can fine-tune what you hear in your headphones while you are recording.

Podasting: The Rode is suitable for podcasting, Skype and Gaming as well. With the headphone port it lends itself to interacting with others when gaming or chatting. It would be best for individual podcasts. It is side-addressed and only has one pickup pattern (cardioid) so would be less suited for an interview situation or group chat than other mics (like the Blue Yeti for example) as it does not have a figure-8 or omni option.

How To Use And Install: Installation is very straightforward. No drivers or anything necessary, it just plugs and plays, then you can adjust the recording volume in your computer control panel. Note there is no gain adjustment on the mic itself.

Platform: We have tested the Rode NT-USB on Mac and PC, it works well on all of them. On PC and Mac you simply connect to an existing USB port. Although we didn’t test it on a tablet, according to Rode the NT-USB is fully compatible with the Apple iPad*, for use with RODE Rec, GarageBand and other audio apps. (*Apple USB Camera Connection kit required to do this).

On The Road: The Rode Mic is very portable so you could easily take it with you to record out and about. However, the desktop stand it comes with is not collapsible, and does not fit in the zip up case that comes with the mic. If portability is a real concern for you, then you might prefer the Audio Technica 2020USB+ USB Mic instead.

Rode NT-USB: USB Recording Microphone Review

Rode NT-USB is one of the best USB mics that beats anything in the under $200 range. It brings exceptional for USB quality without the need for special drivers or any additional 3rd party equipment. Neither is it overly expensive as it offers a solid and durable build, not skimping on quality components. The design is well thought out and provides for a handy headphone monitor and a pair of solid controls. It also comes with a well-fitted pop shield and a decent mount, for no additional cost! While there are cheaper mics for sure, Rode NT-USB, in the long run, will prove to be an infinitely better investment.

Sound & quality

Rode NT-USB delivers quite a superb sound, thanks to a quality cardioid capsule set in a standard studio fashion, only except the mic provides USB interface. It sounds very natural, clear and transparent, and does not suffer from those common effects such as popping and sibilance. The proximity effect is negligible, and it works from a number of angles – so forget about ‘rain dancing’ with positioning. One thing we’ve noticed is that Rode NT-USB is also less susceptible to vibration noise, even with the stock tripod. For best results, you may consider getting an additional suspension kit and shock mount, but I’ll repeat those are highly optional since that tripod thing works far better than expected.

The capsule has an extended frequency response that works well above 10 kHz so it’s very crispy. Moreover, the frontal side is sensitive enough to capture sounds even at the threshold of hearing. A softest whisper comes out very clean, but so does the loud singing! Beautiful dynamic range… Perfect for any vocals, and really gives a professional sound to your recordings. And, because it has a balanced response, it just works well out of the box without needing any post-EQ. Will the quality blow you away? Absolutely, especially for such a price – this mic is like godsent!

Design and features

The mic has a thoughtful design and it appears that Rode has learned a lot from the mistakes of its competitors. For example, a famous Blue Yeti – one of the first USB mics of this class, produced more than 15 years ago and still available today, sounded good for an average consumer who cared more about skype, video games and could have occasionally done some voiceover or podcasting work without really looking into and comparing it to something more advanced. However, the Yeti utilized some rather cheap internal components, which also applied to capsules themselves.

Rode NT-USB vs Blue Yeti

Blue Yeti actually had 3 capsules on board, which posed to bring some magical multifunctionality, namely as of various picking patterns. However, for me that experiment looks more like a failure. Needless to say that if a mic used 3 capsules, that would either mean a significant cost increase or use of cheaper components with inferior performance. Among those various picking patterns, I would unlikely use anything other than cardioid, because omni picks up way too much environment noise and would only be good in sterile studio environment. However, any decent studio is very likely to be equipped with Neumanns, and it would be very funny if someone brought there Blue Yeti.

The stereo mode is a funny feature of course but those noisy capsules make it of little use in any professional application such as album recording etc. Perhaps it could have some potential use for podcasting but I would stick with some decent quality conventional, mono capsule any time. Nonetheless, those far from perfect capsules aren’t the end of a story. Flimsy control buttons on Blue Yeti have caused a lot of replacements. The stand, although solid passed too many vibrations… and the mic’s non-standard size also made it unusable with most of common shock mounts available.

NT-USB Features

Now, Rode NT-USB has none of those problems. For a roughly same price, it offers a significantly better capsule, solid controls and standard thread with a decent tripod stand that is firm yet allows fewer vibrations. Moreover, you get that nice addition of a pop-shield, fitted specifically for the mic.

Rode NT-USB includes all the necessary features for a painless recording. It does not require any special drivers and works well as a plug and play device. It has two controls on the right side that are meant for monitor volume and the mic’s gain. Underneath, there is a standard 3.5 mm jack for headphones. The monitor is quite loud especially on the highest setting, so you’ll have no problem hearing yourself during the recording. Unlike a number of other USB mics, this one is also quite low on self-noise so you won’t hear that common yet annoying hiss as you hit replay.

Overall

Overall, this mic simply rocks… it is relatively cheap but it beats the crap out of the competitors’ models any time. Rode NT-USB is unarguably the best microphone of choice for today. Once you’ll have it side by side with other computer mic, you will realize this. A model with no disadvantages, easy to use and most importantly, high quality sound… it’s impossible not to grab.

Enough said.

Overview

The NT-USB is a highly versatile side-address microphone that is ideal for recording singing and musical performances in addition to spoken applications such as podcasting and voice-over.

It is fully compatible with all mainstream recording applications on both Windows and Mac OS based computers, as well as the Apple iPad using R˜DE Rec, GarageBand, or any other recording app that accepts an external microphone. Use on the Apple iPad requires a suitable USB connection adaptor, such as the Apple Camera Connection Kit.

The body of the NT-USB features a zero-latency stereo headphone monitoring (3.5mm) jack, which allows you to monitor the microphone input in realtime, along with dials to adjust the monitoring level and mix between the computer/iPad audio and the microphone input.

A premium pop-filter is included, which fits onto the base of the mic, positioning the filter the ideal distance from the capsule to minimise plosives (hard ˜B', ˜T' or ˜P' sounds that produce a harsh sound) during singing or speech. Also provided is a high-quality stand mount with industry standard 3/8" thread, desktop tripod stand that allows the NT-USB to sit at a comfortable height on a tabletop, and a pouch for storage of the microphone when not in use.

    Rode NT-USB reviews

NT-USB USB Microphone is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 68.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Fantastic Microphone! I really love this microphone. First of all, it comes with its own pop filter, plus a very long USB cable, which is very handy to have if you're using the USB mic for camera work that is not right next to your computer. As far as sound quality goes, my voice comes out very crisp, clear and natural, and the NT-USB picks up very little background hissing or fan noise, which is fantastic. The build quality feels very solid, and the ability to listen to my voice in real-time while recording gaming content, for example, is very helpful. Overall, I'm glad I made this purchase, and I have suggested that others buy this microphone, because it truly is THAT good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mike S. A. Barbershopper from Research pays off! When I decided I would start recording, I researched what I would need for months. I crawled the web, talked to musicians and sound engineers, and read countless reviews for dozens of usb mics before deciding to get this one. While some of my other options were much cheaper, I am extremely happy with the RDE NT-USB. I sing with a lot of brightness and ping, and it handled that masterfully. I recorded my wife's quartet as well, and the sound didn't get tinny at all. It's a worthwhile investment that I highly recommend. It will be used extensively and will be well-loved for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Jeffery from Absolutely superb USB condenser mic I have accumulated half a dozen USB mics for making podcasts and screencasts. All of them are acceptable, but two really rise to the top. And at the very top is the Rode NT USB. The sound quality is (subjectively) far more pleasing to me than any of my other mics. The controls are large and conveniently located. It WILL pick up any sort of bumps or vibrations, so a shock mount is a must. I recommend the Rode shockmount that has a round, built-in pop filter. If your desk is made of granite and you don't need a shock mount, this microphone has a curved, detachable pop filter than works well. For me, the best setup is with a short, hefty desktop mic stand and the Rode shock mount/filter setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Excellent usb mic After over 35 years in radio broadcasting, I just simi-retired and was looking for a good USB mic that I could use on the road with my lap top when I went out of town. Although I no longer do a daily radio show, I still record commercials and weather forecasts, etc. from home on a part time basis. For that I use a Shure SM7B broadcast XLR mic on my desktop computer and transfer them to on the air with a special program. But I occasionally go out of town so I needed a good USB mic that I could use with my lap top for recording. After reading many reviews I decided to go with the Rode NT-USB and it has exceeded my expectations. I wasn't sure if this would be good enough for broadcast radio,, but this mic does the trick and really sounds good. Not as deep a presence for vocals as the Shure, it is nonetheless very bright sounding, clear, and is good enough for what I do on broadcast radio for out of town. If you do voice overs for Youtube videos (like I also do), this mic is perfect Be sure to order the OURAY Desktop Reflection Filter mic stand along with the Rode mic, it helps a lot with deadening room noise and gives a better all around sound presence. Great mic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Bart from Totally Satisfied I use this mic for voiceovers and I was impressed so much by Rode that I ended up going back and buying their wireless filmmaker lavaliere kit. The audio quality is great! But what I like even more is what they provided. I feel like this was designed by a user of the product rather than some marketing guy or engineer. First the Pop shield is included, it attaches quickly and securely to the mic and does what pop shields do. Next the 20' USB cable. It may seem like a simple thing but it eliminates the headache of buying the mic then realizing you need an extension. Finally it included a $90 studio headphones. Such a deal! Thank you B&H and Rode!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Doodlehedz from Great Sound Quality I happen to say as a newbie podcaster I love this mic. It's definitely a step up from the plug and play iphone/ipad mics that I initially purchased to save money. IT's totally worth the upgrade for sound quality, the ease of use, the fact it comes with a pop shield and it's USB. It's probably not the best for traveling but it does come with a case and it's totally user friendly. Thanks to the guy in the PRO audio department that understood my needs and budget and hooked me up better the second time around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Well - Built Microphone I primarily use this microphone for doing voice-overs for videos. The microphone has a metal body and has good weight to it. I am very impressed with its construction and voice quality. It works straight out of the box. Its handy because you don't have to buy a preamp in addition to a mic. As a note, when you plug the microphone in, it diverts the audio output from the computer into the microphone monitoring port. Its gives professional results at a great price. Very happy with purchase. It should last me a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RunAndGunRudy from Do your research, then come back and buy this mic I work professionally in the film and sound recording industry. Lately I have been looking for a compact microphone during my more mobile projects that I can use on my Mac or even phone. I love portable mobile microphones such as the Sennheiser Clip Mic digital, and really wanted a USB mic that could work on my phone. I normally use powered mic's and this is my first USB variant. I researched for probably about two weeks before I concluded that this mic was the best bang for my buck... I wasn't wrong. This mic is amazing out of the box, crystal clear, and super nice to work with. The built in pop-filter is also a great touch. I would recommend this mic ten-fold and have even swapped a few of my xlr mics out for this beauty. Do your research, then come back and buy this mic, you will eventually come to the same conclusion that I did.
